Schultze: life member and supporter passes

It is my sad duty to inform the membership that one of our CC stalwarts died March 16.

Ed Schultze, 88, of LaMesa, CA. was a Life Member of the Association and one of its strongest supporters.  A veteran of World War II, Korea and Vietnam, was one of the few members of our field to rise to and hold the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.  He retired after 29 years of distinguished service. He was preceded in death by his wife Ellie who he proposed to in Grand Central Station, New York.  They were married in 1947. Ed is survived by daughters Barbara and Karen and his son, Paul. Funeral services will be conducted April 1 at 3 p.m. at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery. — Jack T. Paxton, Executive Director     

A service for Schultze will be held Thursday, April 1, 2010, 3:00 p.m. at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in Point Loma, with a reception to follow. SCHULTZE, EDWARD WILLIAM– Ed Schultze, 88, a longtime resident of La Mesa, went to be with the Lord on March 16, 2010. He was born in Jersey City, New Jersey, on March 26, 1921, the only son of Frieda and Edward.

After entering the Marine Corps in 1942, he met the love of his life Eleanor Sturm, who has been with the Lord since 2004. She said ‘yes’ to his marriage proposal in Grand Central Station, and they were wed on May 24, 1947.

A veteran of World War II, Korea, and Vietnam, Ed achieved the rank of Lt. Colonel during his 29 years of distinguished USMC service, primarily as a Public Information Officer. Ed was very involved in the U.S. Marine Corps Combat Correspondents Association, where he will be sorely missed by his many friends.

After leaving the military, he worked in the health insurance field and then for Roland Francis as a stock broker in La Mesa.

Extremely active, even in their later years, Ed and Eleanor loved to dance, were avid golfers (his drives were always down the middle), pinochle and bridge playing partners with their closest friends, supporters of their local VFW and Elks Lodge, and longtime Warner Springs Ranch members.

Our Mom and Dad were shining examples of how to grow old gracefully – with dignity and a zest for life.

 Always a devoted son, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Ed is survived by his three children, Barbara Schultze of Carlsbad, Karen Knox and husband Craig of Alpine, and Paul Schultze and wife Lin of Eaton, Colorado. His children provided him with four grandsons, Mark (wife Jenni), Brian (wife Alina), Kemper, and Trevor (wife Melissa), and four great-grandchildren, Joshua, Samantha, Connor, and one “bundle of joy” due to arrive in June.

Dad’s attention to detail, which could sometimes drive his family crazy, was a redeeming quality nonetheless. Quick with a joke and always eager to meet new people, Ed is a “light gone out in this world,” but his family knows he and Mom are dancing together once again.
