Recognizing our own

CCHQ recognizes that many members go out of their way in supporting the Association.

The Booster Club and the Dedicated Members list are graphic reminders of this.  What you do not know at times is the great behind-the-scenes support we receive from some of our oldest members.  Most old timers (and many of you new members) are used to seeing a guy come to the conference in a wheel chair or motorized “scooter.”

His name is GySgt. John Harmon, USMC (ret.) Gunny “Jawn” as most of us know him by, is one of our few remaining World War II vets and many years ago was instrumental in helping get this Association formed.

He now lives in the California Veterans Retirement Home in Barstow, CA.  If you review some recent Conference Journals you will see his name listed as a multiple sponsor of Merit Awards.

He is also always on the Booster Club lists.  The Gunny is a strong believer in our programs and support us to the hilt.  In recent weeks he sent in a substantial check to help the relief efforts at Camp Lejeune.

When CCHQ found that no further funding was necessary, we called him.  His reply:  “Use it where you need it.” Because we are revamping our scholarship funding, we asked if he would go along with that. “Absolutely!”  Gunny “Jawn” would probably not appreciate this tribute but, we know he would appreciate hearing from anyone who would be willing to make a telephone call.

He does not use the computer.  His telephone number is: 760.577.5359.
