Project “Mo” seeking donations

Robert "Mo" Morrisey

An ambitious memorial project launched by the rejuvenated San Diego Chapter will honor twice-USMCCCA president and its first executive director, the late Robert “Mo” Morrisey.

“Project Mo” will culminate with the placing of a commemorative plaque, photo and inscription on San Diego’s Mount Soledad in La Jolla during the USMCCCA annual conference September 2012.

For those new to the Association, Mo was a retired mustang major who served as the first Public Affairs Officer ever assigned to a Commandant (Gen Wallace M. Greene) . Many of today’s public affairs practices can be attributed to this officer who had the Commandant’s ear and was not shy about whispering into it. Following his retirement he was instrumental in establishing the San Diego Chapter which, in recent years, had lapsed into inactivity.

Now a group of active duty Marines have stepped up and breathing new life into the chapter. Prior to the New Orleans conference, they petitioned the USMCCCA to have the unit renamed the Robert “Mo” Morrisey Chapter. They also requested permission from the USMCCCA Foundation to memorialize Mo at San Diego’s Mount Soledad Memorial. Both the name change and the Memorial fundraiser were authorized.

To accomplish their goal, a total of $1200 must be raised. According to new Chapter President Luis Agostini “honoring this Marine leader is long overdue and we feel including him in the Mount Soledad Memorial is the proper way to go.”

Agostini emphasized that all contributions to the memorial will go through the USMCCCA Foundation and may be made by using the link here. He also said that members and friends desiring to contribute may also do so by sending their checks or credit card information to CCHQ at 110 Fox Court, Wildwood, FL 34785 or emailing usmccca@cfl.rr.com or calling 352.748.4698. Contributors will be able to see progress of “Project Mo” on the website.

If the Memorial receives excess money, the remaining donations will go to the Foundation’s Scholarship Fund.

Each contributor will be listed on the website, in the newsletter, “Now Hear This” and in the 2012 Annual Conference Journal.
