Marines –
What a privilege it is to serve in our Corps at this historic time. The President’s announcement of his Afghanistan Strategy affects Marines across the Corps and has public affairs offices buzzing from coast to coast. The Chairman conducted a short-notice visit to the Carolina MAGTF, and our Marines did a good job hosting him and challenging him with great questions.

Good work keeping our communications coordinated and timely during this frenetic period. Continue to serve well our many audiences: the general public, Marines and their families, and our senior leaders. Continue to keep the information flowing with updates, and call if you need clarification on an issue.

Story and photo by Don Knight, Awards Chairman

The seemingly endless rows of headstones shelter the remains of more than 320,000 veterans from every war and major conflict in United States history. They cover 624 rolling acres at Arlington National Cemetery, overlooking the nation’s capital.

Each granite stone and tomb has its own story, often involving tales of great valor and heroism.  The stories comprise no small part of our nation’s history.

And so it would seem appropriate that 40 Marines from headquarters, U.S. Marine Corps and new students from the Defense Information School at Ft. Meade in nearby Maryland would journey to Arlington on a warm, cloudless day in October.  Their mission:  to pay tribute to three fallen Marines, one from World War II and two from the war in Iraq.

Cy “Obie” O’Brien wrote hundreds of stories about his fellow Marines during combat on Pacific islands during World War II.

That was more than 60 years ago. Today, it’s a different story.  It’s all  about this 90-year-old warrior, the former sergeant and newspaperman who carried a  typewriter and rifle to the beaches of Guam and Iwo Jima in 1944 and 1945.

O’Brien is not looking for the spotlight but when his hometown newspaper heard about his wartime exploits a reporter and a photographer came to his apartment seeking an interview and a photo. They got both. The story and large headline (“Former Combat Correspondent Looks Back on World War II”),  and the color photo dominated the front page of the Silver Spring , Md. Gazette on Sept. 9.
