MOAA seeks Director for Print and Digital Media

The Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) is the nation’s largest and most influential association of over 377,000 current, former, and retired military officers and their families. MOAA is dedicated to maintaining a strong national defense and to preserving the earned entitlements of members of the uniformed services and their families and survivors.  

The Director for Print and Digital Media manages the association’s print and digital publishing programs for member communications. The director serves as publisher and editor-in-chief of Military Officermagazine, running all aspects of its operations to include editorial policy, communications objectives, content, design, production, distribution, budget, and advertising sales. The director also producesthe association’s series of print and digital member-service booklets and flyers.

 The director conducts the association’s digital publishing operations, to include its website, several email newsletters, an internal social media application, and external social media activities.

 The incumbent supervises 15 employees, manages an annual operating budget of $3.9 million, and generates annual advertising revenue of $2.7 million.

 Specific Responsibilities — Including, but not limited to, the following:

  • In coordination with the association president, sets and executes editorial policy and communications objectives.
  • Develops and administers the operating budget and national advertising sales program.
  • Plans editorial content to help achieve the association’s broad objectives as well as to meet members’ informational and entertainment needs.
  • Creates and manages the magazine production schedule, coordinating with internal staff and external writers, artists, photographers, pre-press bureaus, printers, paper suppliers, and U.S. Postal Service to ensure regular and timely delivery to members.
  • Directs the operation of the association’s website to ensure close integration with other communications programs and achievement of the association’s objectives. Responsible for the site’s content, design, programming, hardware and software procurement, maintenance, and hosting.
  • Manages the association’s general email newsletter as well as several targeted email newsletters. Ensures compliance with industry best practices for electronic communication, to include CAN SPAM.
  • Manages association social media programs, to include blogs, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Vimeo, and LiveStream video. Sets policies for, manages the operation of, and administers the contract for the association’s internal social media platform.
  • Manages the design, editing, and production of the association’s non-periodical, member-support booklets and brochures.
  • Negotiates and administers contracts (annual worth in excess of $3 million) for pre-press, printing, website development and hosting, software development, social media, and other services.
  • Interacts extensively with board of directors, headquarters staff, and individual members by mail, phone, email, Internet, and direct contact.
  • Serves as staff advisor to the Board of Directors Print and Digital Media Committee.
  • Hires and supervises 15 directly-assigned, permanent departmental staff.

Skills, Attributes, Knowledge Required

  • Proven sound judgment and initiative, a flexible attitude, and superior political acumen.
  • Ability to effectively manage and develop a large department encompassing varied professional areas of responsibility.
  • Strong communications and journalistic-style writing skills.
  • Hands-on knowledge of both the creative and business sides of media development, to include design, layout, printing, distribution, software development, and advertising.
  • Excellent computer/technical skills (word processing, desktop publishing, Web page creation, image editing, website management, and software applications).
  • Familiarity with association management, operations, and services as well as military affairs and current defense policy would be desirable.

Professional and Education Requirements

  • Must have served as a commissioned officer in one of the U.S. military services.
  • Significant senior executive experience, to include at least five years in developing and managing major publications programs. 
  • Master’s degree or equivalent work experience in journalism, mass communications, or public relations.
