CCHQ heard from Ralph Austin that longtime member and former Leatherneck staffer Chuck Tyler passed away sometime last week. He served in Korea as a photographer with Jack Lewis and Ralph Austin. More info will be posted when it becomes available. From emails…

“I will miss that raspy voice — He was one of the elders who took me under his wings and reminded me that we all had big egos but even bigger hearts! Chuck personified that. He was always very warm and one of the first people to welcome my wife to our family.
Rest easy my friend you will be sorely missed!”

“Very bad news. Chuck was on Leatherneck’s staff in the 50s and again in the early 60s. I count him as one of my best advisers as I learned the ropes at Leatherneck. He hosted Leatherneck staff  reunion Dinners at the annual conference for decades after Leatherneck was no longer an official Marine Corps publication. I met a great many superb Marines through  Chuck. Among those were Jack Lewis and Bob Morrisey.”
May he rest in peace.

“While I was editor of the Flight Jacket and then Section Chief at Joint ISO, El Toro, Chuck was often with me, work and play.  He operated from his home in a nearby valley and from my office as well.  A really great friend and top photographer.”
